No income yet? Here's how rent gets paid

The question we hear most is "they have nowhere to go and no income yet, so who pays the rent?" Here are the common answers in Northeast Ohio, and how we help line them up before move-in.

1. Their own income

A job, even a new one, is the most common way rent gets paid from month two on. Free job help is available through OhioMeansJobs centers, and our voluntary Pathways program helps residents with work, ID and resources.

2. SSI or SSDI

People with a disability may qualify for SSI or SSDI. Free application help is available through SOAR, which helps people experiencing or at risk of homelessness apply.

3. Rapid rehousing

People experiencing homelessness can be assessed for rapid rehousing by calling 2-1-1 for Coordinated Intake. Programs vary and have waitlists, so start early.

4. Veterans programs

Veterans and their families may qualify for help through veterans housing programs such as SSVF.

5. One-time help for move-in

Local charities sometimes help with a deposit or first month's rent. A rent letter from the housing provider is usually required, and we provide one.

Our rule: nobody moves in until payment is confirmed in writing. That protects the resident and the referring agency. Programs, amounts and rules change, so we confirm each one directly before relying on it.
